PROVENANCE: Private collection South Germany (acquired from Galerie Stangel, Munich in 1963).

The most unusual of Max Beckmann’s graphic self-portraits is the one in the Königin Bar in Berlin. Beckmann seems to have found the frantic pace of Berlin nightlife a particularly inspiring source of material as the large number of motifs taken from this environment indicates. The way he has viewed himself scarcely bears comparison with any of his other self-portraits. Here Beckmann looks terrified, turning away from what is going on, staring away from the scene going on around him, eyes wide open, part of it yet not. More than any other artist of his day, Max Beckmann visualised his examination of his ego as reflecting the state of a society that, rootless and bereft of values, plunged headling from one pleasure to the next. [KD].

Good overall impression.
