The immediacy with which Otto Dix depicted his models is memorable for a realism in which he was unsurpassed by his contemporaries. Otto Dix captured the basic character traits of a model with unerring assurance. This led to coarse realism that often seems exaggerated but is basically not. Dix captured essentials in a portrait and laid them down, even when they were unflattering. The resignation in the Gypsy woman’s glance is underpinned by an inner dignity as Dix saw and felt it. This is what distinguishes him from Otto Mueller, who visualised an earthy, urge-driven licentiousness in his Gypsy women. Apart from the great triptychs, his portraits stand out in Otto Dix’s work and it is on them that his reputation rests in the annals of German painting in the first half of the 20\up6 th century.
