1884 Rottluff bei Chemnitz - 1976 Berlin
Die heiligen drei Könige. 1917.
Woodcut.
Schapire 196. Signed and also dated in the printing block. On laid paper by J.W. Zanders (with watermark). 50 x 39,4 cm (19,6 x 15,5 in). Sheet: 62 x 51 cm (24,4 x 20 in).
One of ten woodcuts from the Neumann portfolio, published by Graphisches Kabinett J.B. Neumann, Berlin 1919.

The Neumann portfolio, published in 1919, comprises important works of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, their printing blocks were cut between 1914 and 1918. These three single sheets – besides the "Heiligen drei Könige" also "Katzen" and "Mädchen vor dem Spiegel" – offer insight into the artist’s comprehensive graphic work, a field in which Rottluff made remarkable accomplishments. [JS]
