Peter Severin Kröyer came to Skagen the first time in 1882, presumably by invitation of Michael and Anna Ancher, who were co-founders of the loosely organized painter’s colony at the northernmost tip of Denmark a couple of years earlier. In the years after his wedding in 1889 his young wife, the painter and architect Marie Triepcke, accompanied him. A close friendship developed between the two artist couples, which Kröyer also depicted on some his paintings. In 1888 he depicted a merry summer party on the painting "Hipp, hipp, hurra! Künstlerfest in Skagen" with the Ancher family and other artists, in 1893 he captured a walk on the beach of Anna Ancher and Marie Kröyer ("Sommeraften ved Skagen Sønderstrand"). This small female portrait from December 1882 presumably also shows Anna Ancher, whom he had met only in the summer of the same year. [CB].
