Sicherndes Reh. 1913.
Bronze with dark brown patina.
Cf. Gabler 189. With name and estate stamp "A.G. [in circle]" on plinth. Rear of plinth with foundry mark "H. Noack, Berlin Friedenau". 32,2 x 31,5 x 11 cm (12,6 x 12,4 x 4,3 in).
One of the two deers that August Gaul had made as lifesize model for a monument for the painter Walter Leistikow, which has never been executed. With label of gallery Paul Cassirer pasted to underside of plinth, there inscribed "No. 18401/4 / Aug. Gaul / Reh Kopf gedreht". Cassirer sold casts that were both made during the artist's lifetime, as well as estate casts from 1922, which is why an exact attribution to either one is difficult (cf. on the two works by August Gaul for which there is proof at Paul Cassirer the list by Dr. Roland Dorn in ex. cat. Der Tierbildhauer August Gaul, published by Ursel Berger, Georg-Kolbe-Museum Berlin et al 1999/2000, pp. 76-83, there no. 71 [Reh II]). [KD].

We are grateful to Dr. Roland Dorn, Zurich, for the kind expert advice.
