This portrait of Dora Maar is one of those works by Picasso that deliver proof of the artist‘s intensive occupation with the medium etching. Five printing plates for one color each combined form the portrait of Dora Maar: blue, yellow, red, black and a dark red. For each of the plates the artist carried out several work steps. In the final state the printing plate with the dark red is no longer used and as a further variant Picasso did not print the black plate in part of the edition in black but in a light blue. Our sheet also shows that variant. Pablo Picasso explored the entire range of technical possibilities with his deep understanding of the matter, making this sheet a prime example of his passionate occupation with the vast amount of technical details of the execution, which allows him to realize the best result possible.
