PROVENANCE: Private collection Germany.

After the first world war, Erich Heckel continued to spend his summers by the seaside. Female nudes in a natural setting were the most important motif that Erich Heckel incorporated there in watercolors that are very painterly in interpretation. The additional use of opaque paint underscores the impression, especially since it strikingly determines the composition in dynamic parallel brush strokes. The lush, jungle-like landscape contrasts with the rather delicately evoked female nude, which Heckel has visualised without much modelling in deliberate contrast to its natural surroundings. Thus a peculiarly ambivalent mood has been created because the handling of the motif is entirely dominated by the painterly character of the watercolor technique. The early 1920s introduced a phase of introspection in Heckel. The “Brücke” years were far behind him. Erich Heckel re-oriented himself, viewing his future artistic vocation as adhering to a painterly interpretation of his subject matter. [KD].
