Emil Nolde's virtuosity in watercolors becomes obvious in the work "Meerabend“ from around 1935. With a free and spontaneous stroke of the brush and in intensive lucent colors, the artist illustrates waves and sky and creates a tremenduously dense atmosphere. A talent that museum director Max Sauerlandt described in his Nolde monography from 1921: "Nolde knows the sea like no other artist before him“. Nolde's nature is remote from the world and solely lives from his artistic perspective, which, determined by color and form, shows abstract traits. "We are familiar with Nolde's motifs […], they are part of our collective image memory. His pictures sharpen our view of the beauty of this nature“ (Jörg Garbrecht, in: Emil Nolde.
