Our work is also particularly captivating for the reduced formal language with simple lines and surfaces, in which Munch depicts the classic theme of bathers. Two female nudes stand on a coast - one wringing out her hair, the other with a white cloth covering her private parts. We see a third figure as rear nude swimming in the water. In this work Munch created more than just a representation of a summer idyll, as it is often the case with works of this theme. It is not least for the specific make that we find aspects all in line with the then zeitgeist, such as the portrayal of awoman as a great seductress - in the sense of a "Susanna in the Bath" - as well as the relationship between man and nature. The bath as a connection with nature and a sensual experience acts here as a symbol of man’s quest for meaning in the world.
