The Dutch architecture painter Adrianus Eversen gained fame for his meticulously executed townscapes characterized by an atmospheric lighting and a unique staffage. Unlike his teacher, the architecture and veduta painter Cornelius Springer, Eversen followed a more romantic ideal with his cityscapes: Inspired by the narrow alleys of Dutch towns with their brick buildings and old churches, Eversen did not render a lifelike reproduction of a specific place, but tried to create a typical impression composed of various elements. The work offered here shows a part of the Westerkerk in Enkhuizen. Eversen made several depictions of this secluded corner, at different times of the year, with varying staffage and in several techniques (cf. Overduin 52-5, 28-1, 57-6, Winter 44-2, Aquarell 24-12). These means allowed Eversen to reinterpret his favorite theme - the Dutch town - over and over again. [FS]
