With the estate stamp of the Kunstmuseum Basel (Lugt 1570 b) and the hand-written registration number "Ill/Da 67". Dated, titled and inscribed "Hauptmann" by a hand other than that of the artist on the reverse. On smooth and firm creme paper. 35.5 x 47.5 cm (13.9 x 18.7 in), the full sheet.
In this work the artist references Gerhart Hauptmann's drama "Und Pippa tanzt!" from 1905 which premiered in Berlin in 1906. [CH].
• Particularly detailled and dynamic figure composition from the Davos days.
• With his masterly line handling, Kirchner succeeds in capturing the immediacy and dense atmosphere of the dynamic multi-figure theater scene.
• Around 1924, the artist was intesively occupied with the depcituion of stage scenes, making, among others, the painting "Das Versprechen. Hutten begrüßt Sickingen" after Goethe's play "Götz von Berlichingen" (Gordon 745) or "Die Erscheinung der Sieben im Eulenspiegel" after the stories of Till Eulenspiegel (Gordon 752)
.
