• Watercolors from the artist's early creative period are very rare on the auction market.
• In this watercolor Karl Schmidt-Rottluff stages the edge of a wood in a mysterious winterly sunset light of a refined cool gray-blue with various brightness values.
• Similar to the woodcut, the blank paper parts make for the actual element of composition
.

A forest edge lying mysteriously in the wintry evening light. Kept in cool gray-blue with different levels of brightness, Schmidt-Rottluff mimics a fine graphic abstraction in the coloring, which at the same time encourages him to simplify the form to a certain extent. The rhythm of the pictorial composition and the contrast between strong elements in the foreground and simple areas in the background, a characteristic feature of his later work, appear here for the first time as qualities of the still young style. Comparable to the woodcut, leaving parts of the paper blank became the actual compositional element. The trees experience an astonishing concentration as a determining motif. [MvL]
