For once not naked and frolicking in the water near the coast, a man and a woman, dressed in pants and jacket, are sitting on a piece of rock at the edge of a bay (?) on Fehmarn. Below the steep shore we see a small sailboat, the sails sagged as there is no wind; a girl standing aft seem to make contact with another person on the bank of the calm water. The two scenes probably have nothing to do with one another: in the bottom part children who learn to master life on the water from scratch, and the two people, walkers acting like tourists, taking a short break on the rocks and observed by Kirchner. One can assume that Kirchner did not depict strangers in his watercolor, but rather fellow travelers or visitors, such as Otto Mueller and his wife Maschka, who followed Kirchner's request in 1913 and stayed a few days on Fehmarn. The conspicuously high hat, which Kirchner keeps ready as a kind of identification mark for his friend, can be seen here. Otto Mueller even wore this hat while sunbathing naked and smoking a pipe, as characterized by Kirchner in a painting from the same year. [MvL]
