Emil Nolde refused the perfection of artistic techniques- also when he began to familiarize himself with watercolor painting. He sought a method that would allow for room for coincidence as an artistic means in order to express the immediate aspect of the painting process. For the watercolors Nolde was increasingly inspired by his surroundings and he made them with a spontaneous stroke of the brush. He adds contours to the motifs as if he jotted down notes. Only the free application of the colors adds definition. The result is an account of the very moment, which in its expression remains close to the depiction of the object or the person.
