For the portrait of Beethoven that Andy Warhol made shortly before his death, he drew on the 1819 painting "Beethoven with the Manuscript of the Missa Solemnis" (Beethoven-Haus, Bonn) by Joseph Karl Stieler. This portrait defined the image of the master of classical music world-wide world. It is still present in Germany today, but also in Brazil and Guatemala, not least through stamps commemorating the composer's 250th birthday. It shows the famous German musician composing. Andy Warhol superimposed the sequence of notes of the first famous bars of the so-called Moonlight Sonata, Opus 27, No. 2, composed in 1801, which is one of the most famous pieces of classical music and is known all over the world. Andy Warhol's Beethoven sheet thus follows the principles of Pop Art in an almost exemplary manner: Warhol uses a well-known motif and transfers it into the design canon so typical of his work. In this color silkscreen, Warhol not only portrays the person but also his musical work.
The work was published by Helmut Wünsche, who also signed the certificate stamp on the reverse, alongside Rupert Jason Smith (printer) and Fred Huges (estate). The gallery owner from Königswinter, a town south of Bonn, was one of Andy Warhol's German representatives and published the book "Andy Warhol. Das Graphische Werk 1962-1980", the first catalogue raisonné of Andy Warhol's prints. Through him, Andy Warhol became acquainted with the Cologne Cathedral, Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, and Stieler's painting of Ludwig van Beethoven.
