Kleine Rheinlandschaft. 1765.
Oil on panel.
Signed "Schüz inv. et. vec" and dated lower centre. 33 : 43 cm (12,9 : 16,9 in). This picture by the landscape painter Christian Georg Schütz I is a characteristic example for his Œuvre, which is clearly influenced by the Utrecht artist Herman Saftleven and his atmospheric landscapes of the Rhine and the Mosel. Inspired by these motifs, the idyllic Rhine region soon becomes the leitmotif of his works. Just as his Durch guide, Schütz also portraits the Rhine landscape flushed with warm light and animated with groups of figures. Christian Georg Schüz I, whose works were also treasured by Goethe, is regarded as the founder of a dynasty of painters, with his sons Franz and Heinrich Jospeh as two other important members. [RS]

PROVENIENZ: Private collection Germany.

Good overall impression. Slightly discoloured. Edges minimally rubbed due to framing. Upper rigth corner minimally bumped. With small retouchings, particularly to the sky.
