Seemingly unimpressed by the political troubles of his days, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff executed one of his renowned suburban landscapes in watercolors, its compositional arrangement shows almost the same features as a painting does. Compact forms are framed by stringent brush drawings, as it is always the case with the artist. The reserved coloring is particularly striking. It eases the sincerity of the overall expression. In his large-size watercolors Karl Schmidt-Rottluff created a type that - characteristic of his painting – is coined by a great poise in the watercolor technique, leading, in combination with is special artistic expression, to such impressive results as it is the case with this work.
