Fritz Schwarz-Waldegg is one of the most important representatives of Austrian Expressionism after World War I. He was member and in 1926 president of the ‘Hagenbund‘, one of Vienna’s most progressive artist associations. After the occupation and annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany in March 1938, Schwarz-Waldegg had to give up his studio and lived and worked covert. In 1942 he was deported to the concentration camp Maly Trostinez near Minsk where he was killed 4 September, 1942. [CB].
