Johann Gottfried Steffan was born in Switzerland in 1815 and initially served an apprenticeship as lithographer. In 1833 he came to Munich where he was active in this field, however, he also took first drawing lessons with Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Kaulbach and others. As of 1839 Steffan was exclusively occupied with painting and showed the influence of Dutch painting, especially the art of Carl Rottmann. He was friends with Friedrich Voltz, who also started as lithographer and etcher before he changed to painting. Steffan's most famous student was Joseph Wenglein.
