The frequency with which Stenner engages with himself in his art is quite surprising. Self-portraits, such as those by Lovis Corinth or Max Beckmann, with a scrutinizing gaze often address states of inner being, perhaps also compelling experiences, some of which are transferred into the painting in a disguised manner. In the lost portrait " Blauer Knabe" (Blue Boy), the artist shows himself confidently in an elegant costume and elegant surroundings. In the present "Selbstbildnis\~im\~Kostüm (Der Römer)", we also witness a moment in the artist's life. "I attended the artists' festival and had a great time," the artist wrote in a letter. "The costume consisted of a wide dark blue Roman cloak and a bright red cape. Both belonging to the Academy and they didn't cost me anything [..] some say it is the best of my paintings," he wrote to his siblings Lissi, Fritz, and Hugo on February 1, 1913 (quoted\~from:\~Karin von Maur, Der Maler Hermann Stenner\~im\~Spiegel seiner Korrespondenz, Munich 2006, p. 286).

In this painting from 1913, Stenner had ultimately refined his painting technique in his final creative phase. On a coarse, unprimed canvas, Stenner places his self-portrait in costume over a large area in strong color contrasts, with parts of the canvas left unpainted. He tamed his head of hair with a headband, like a Roman wreath, and staged himself with a direct, confident gaze against a background of irregular surfaces in light blue and delicate violet. The observer can sense Stenner's new painterly freedom, gained almost entirely from color. There is no doubt that his visit to the Sonderbund exhibition in Cologne the previous year had provided an enormous boost for Stenner's stylistic development, as he saw works of the latest developments in art there, Fauvism, Expressionism, and Cubism. Above all, the bold pictorial ideas of Cubists such as Picasso and Braque and their radical dissolution of the familiar pictorial structure and their fragmentation seem to have had a lasting effect on Stenner, as can be seen in the background of this picture.
