Bartsch 155. Hollstein 256. Meder 256 II a (of III). Schoch/Mende/Scherbaum 256. Inscribed in printing block in upper margin and dated in Roman as well as with dedication text in Latin in cartouche in right margin. On laid paper (with watermark "Cologne coat of arms (three crowns)", Meder 193), trimmed to bordering line, with minimal margin in left and at bottom. 43 x 32,7 cm (16,9 x 12,8 in).
Verso with stamp of unknown collector (Lugt 899).
Transl. of text in cartouche: "Albrecht Dürer from Nuremberg would like to honor the main secretary of the Roman Imperial Governement Ulrich, Varnbüler with surname, with this picture, whom he loves and exceptionally, and whose name he wants to bring to the world for it to be known." (quote after: Schoch/Mende/Scherbaum, p. 467). [CB].
