In Otto Piene's art the fire as a destructive element is elevated to a creative force. When the fixative is set on fire, the color pigments gelatinize so that a restructured transparent and shaded surface comes into being. In this work the newly formed porous crater landscape of molten pigment, soot and smoke is well visible. This approach does not require a rigid composition. When the flame is put out, nature's organic becoming is confronted with the artist's controlled interference and is taken to a synthesis. These fire pictures have their origin in the year 1961, they "increasingly resemble organic forms“. (Quote from Dr. Anette Brunner, Otto Piene. Zero: Werke von 1957-1966, ex. cat. Galerie Koch, Hanover 2013, p. 50).
