• Erich Heckel was already stationed in Ostend as a medic in the year of his birth and until the end of the war in 1918, later as head of the medical platoon.
• Despite the war, Heckel's works continued to circulate, through, among others, essays and illustrations in art journals, through editions of newly created prints such as the etching offered here and through the art trade.
• The depiction of the man with an amputated leg striding along the street visualizes Heckel's immediate experiences in the midst of the First World War.
• A further copy of this etching is in the collection of the Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main.
