Die Pelzmütze. 1912.
Lithograph.
Krüger L 159 I (of IV). Monogrammed, dated and inscribed "22". On off-white paper. 38.5 x 34.7 cm (15.1 x 13.6 in). Sheet: 54,9 x 42 cm (21,6 x 16,5 in).
The depicted person presumably is Pechstein's wife Lotte, whom he married in spring of 1911. Charlotte Kaprolat (1893-1955) and Max Pechstein met at the Berlin studio of Georg Kolbe in winter of 1908. Charlotte, who fascinated Pechstein with her dark eyes and hair and her full lips, hence became his preferred model for more than a decade. [JS].

•- Very rare. The only copy of the first printing state on the international auction market (source: artprice.com), still with the shadows to the left and right of the head and the horizontal stripes in the background.
• Presaumably an early, striking portrait of his wife Lotte, made shortly after their marriage in 1911.
• Further copies of the rare lithograph known in four printing states are at, among others, the Kupferstichkabinett Berlin and the Buchheim Museum, Bernried.
• One of the rare prints by the artist that has survived in several printing states and is therefore particularly exemplary of Pechstein's technical approach.
• Important provenance: Formerly part of the important graphic collection of the Cologne tobacco manufacturer Heinrich Neuerburg (1883–1956) and finally part of the "Brücke" collection of Hermann Gerlinger
.

PROVENANCE: Collection of Heinrich Neuerburg, Cologne (with the collector's blindstamp, Lugt 1344a).
Hermann Gerlinger Collection, Würzburg (acquired in 2000: Sotheby's, London, with the collector's stamp on the reverse, Lugt 6032).

EXHIBITION: Kunstmuseum Moritzburg, Halle an der Saale (permanent loan from the Hermann Gerlinger Collection, 2001-2017).
Buchheim Museum, Bernried (permanent loan from the Hermann Gerlinger Collection, 2017-2022).

LITERATURE: Sotheby's, London, Old Masters, Modern and Contemporary Prints, October 21, 2000, lot 253 (with illu.).
Hermann Gerlinger, Katja Schneider (eds.), Die Maler der Brücke. Inventory catalog Hermann Gerlinger Collection, Halle (Saale) 2005, pp. 400-401, SHG no. 874 (with illu.).

In very good condition. Upper and lower margin with color stains from the printing. Upper corners with isolated smoothed creases and with isolated faint handling marks and rubbings.
