In this comprehensiveness a unique collection of the typical red Baedeker travel guides, which were the prototype of a modern guide up into the 20th century. With regards to richness of information and graphical material, the clearly structured content and handiness, the "red Baedeker" (LGB I, 217) set new standards in the field of travel guides; for the culture- and history-minded traveler who could not afford a "Cicerone" or personal guide it became an essential companion. - At hand are ca. 640 vols. in German (incl. ca. 250 double copies), 260 vols. in French ( incl. ca. 80 double copies) and ca. 295 vols. in English (incl. ca. 55 double copies). Countries and cities covered are mostly in Europe, among them Germany (Northern, North Western, North Eastern, Southern Germany, Berlin etc.), Rhineland (earliest edition: J. Klein, 'Rheinreise von Straßburg bis Düsseldorf' , 4th edition 1843, Hinrichsen D 3), Switzerland and Austria, Tyrol, Italy, Holland and Belgium, France, Paris, Spain and Portugal, Greece, Great Britain, London, Sweden and Norway, Russia, as well as non-European destinations, such as Palestine, Egypt, Canada and the U.S. etc. - Not collationed all the way through, most, however, complete.
